Nik Bonitto walks it off for Broncos in wild OT win

The Denver Broncos blew a fourth-quarter lead on the road on Sunday Night Football, but the team’s offense woke up, and the defense stepped up for a 27-26 overtime win on the back of Nik Bonitto’s moment for the ages.

An 18-play 71-yard drive finished with a Jake Moody field goal to even the score at 20 all as regulation ended. The Commanders converted on a third and 25 and took advantage of multiple late-game 3-and-outs plus a Bo Nix pick.

The Broncos got the ball first in OT and quickly worked down the field on Bo Nix’s arm to Evan Engram’s big play early in overtime to set up an RJ Harvey five-yard punch-in.

Washington moved the ball to midfield in overtime, but was stuck with a fourth down and a lot of pressure on Marcus Mariota. The quarterback, who was dead to rights, threw up a ball that Brandon Jones picked off to end the game… but Talanoa Hufanga was called for pass interference, forcing the defense to defend play No. 80 on the night.

Exhausted, the defense allowed a long Terry McLaurin touchdown a few snaps later… that was also called back. That left a long third down in plus territory, where Mariota found Deebo Samuel on the next play for a big-time strike to get down to the goal line, torching Riley Moss.

The Broncos stuffed a run, Pat Surtain II won a battle against McLaurin and Hufanga broke up a ball in Zach Ertz’s hands, leaving a fourth and goal.

On fourth down, the Commanders went right back at PS2 — Mariota nailed McLaurin on a slant for a touchdown.

The home team then rolled the dice, going for two and the win.

But where the Commanders drew up a perfect play for Mariota to walk it off to a wide open target, an unblocked Bonitto shut the door — batting the ball down and keeping the nine-game win streak alive.

Bonitto also had a sack and a forced fumble in the game.

Nix finished with 321 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception, plus another 16 yards on the ground. Harvey notched two touchdowns and ran for 35 yards on 13 carries. The Broncos’ offense was ineffective for much of the night, putting pressure on the defense, which cracked late — but Bonitto, a DPOY candidate, came through when the Broncos’ back was up against the wall.

The Broncos are still tied atop the AFC at 10-2, traveling to Las Vegas next week.
