Nik Bonitto had some thoughts after Courtland Sutton got paid

Denver Broncos edge-rusher Nik Bonitto is hoping it’s his turn to get paid next.

But he’s also keeping a good head on his shoulders after wide receiver Courtland Sutton inked a massive extension with the Broncos worth more than $90 million.

The Denver Post’s Luca Evans chatted with Bonitto on Monday after the Sutton news broke, and he had a couple of things to say.

“I’ll talk to him. That’s tough. Alright, yeah. I gotta talk to him. But nah, that’s tough,” Bonitto told Evans of the Sutton deal.

Despite having 13.5 sacks a year ago, Nik Bonitto is entering the final year of his deal with the Broncos. The former second-round pick is due about $5.3 million this year, a nice raise after he made a little more than $3 million his first three years in the NFL.

Still, the Chiefs just gave defensive end George Karlaftis a new deal worth $93 million with $62 million guaranteed. For perspective, Karlaftis had eight sacks for Kansas City a season ago.

“I know I have a great agent, and I know he’ll take care of that,” Bonitto told Evans. “I have 100 percent trust in him. And I know the Broncos want me to be here as well. So at the end of the day, I have no worries that they’ll figure out whatever they need to figure out.”

That’s a similar tone to what Bonitto said at his youth football camp nine day ago. He’s trusting the process, but it also sounds like he would enjoy being the name that GM George Paton, head coach Sean Payton and owner / CEO Greg Penner choose to focus on soon.

For now, training camp has only just begun, so Nik Bonitto has another six weeks or so before the regular season to hopefully ink a massive extension with the Broncos.
