Broncos won’t have Mims for Week 2 against Jaguars

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Unlike last week, the Broncos won’t have all hands on deck for Sunday’s regular-season home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr., who has been listed on the injury report each of the last two weeks due to the foot injury he suffered Aug. 28 in the preseason finale against the Minnesota Vikings, was ruled out by the Broncos on the injury report issued after Friday’s practice.

Mims did not practice either Thursday or Friday and was listed as a “DNP” on Wednesday’s estimated injury report, wish was issued in lieu of an actual practice as the Broncos opted to give the players their mandated off-day Wednesday, rather than Tuesday as has historically been typical following Monday Night Football games.

The fourth-year wide receiver left early in Monday’s 31-10 defeat at Kansas City due to what was announced in the press box as a hip injury, but he returned. After the game, Mims was confident he would not miss any further playing time.

“I feel fine. I’ll be good, should be all right,” Mims said in the Arrowhead Stadium locker room Monday night. “Just some old stuff coming back up, but I should be fine for the next week.”

That did not prove to be the case.

BRONCOS HELD BACK MIMS ON RETURNS DURING WEEK 1

Mims was held back from kickoff returns Monday, which Broncos special-teams coordinator Darren Rizzi attributed to him being “a little bit banged up” due to the pre-existing foot injury heading into the contest. Running backs Jonah Coleman and RJ Harvey were back deep.

Cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine filled in for Mims on punt returns.

“He’s a sure-handed guy, really good decision maker,” Rizzi said of the third-year cornerback. “You have to have a plan pregame and then during the game, right? So, you only have the 48 guys that are active. Some of those other returners weren’t up and active last week/

“Abrams-Draine obviously was the guy, but he’s a guy that’s been working on it for the last couple years since I’ve been here. He’s been a guy that’s, again, sure-handed good decision-maker and that’s why he was there.”

Meanwhile, Harvey was a limited participant in Friday’s practice and is listed as questionable. Harvey was also listed with limited participation Thursday.

Broncos edge rusher Jonah Elliss and wide receiver Troy Franklin were also listed on this week’s injury reports due to shoulder and knee issues, respectively, but both had full practice participation throughout the week and are good to go for Sunday.
