Report: Broncos may have lost defensive lineman for the season

The Denver Broncos have already been plagued by the injury bug to start training camp.

Dre Greenlaw had a scare with his quad, Alex Singleton had surgery to repair a broken thumb, and Drew Sanders had surgery to deal with a foot injury he suffered, among a handful of other smaller injuries.

On Friday, the defense got more bad news, as it was reported that Matt Henningsen was being evaluated for an Achilles tear. KUSA-Ch. 9’s Mike Klis was the first to report the news.

The injury happened during the Broncos’ joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday as he was competing in 1-on-1 drills. It is not officially confirmed than a torn Achilles is the diagnosis, as more MRI tests on Friday are needed to confirm the severity of the injury.

Henningsen, 26, is a valuable depth piece on the defensive line for the orange and blue. He played in all 17 games in 2022 and 2023 and has recorded 40 total tackles and a sack. In 2024, the additions of Malcolm Roach and John Franklin-Myers bumped him to the practice squad. He was a sixth-round pick out of Wisconsin for the Broncos back in the 2022 NFL Draft.

If the tests on Friday are what the Broncos fear, Henningsen will miss the entire 2025 campaign. While he’s not one of the core guys that will make the biggest impact on the line, his presence as a solid depth piece who knows the system will be missed.
