Marvin Mims leaves practice early with an apparent injury

Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims left practice early on Friday after what appeared to be an injury during Day 7 of training camp.

Mims pulled up gingerly while running a deep route on a pass. The Athletic’s Nick Kosmider reported from the field that Mims was immediately examined by trainers after pulling up on the play. Visibly frustrated, Mims threw his helmet and moved toward the sideline in clear pain before leaving the practice field and heading to the locker room alongside the team’s training staff.

The severity of the injury is unclear at this time. No official update has been provided by the Broncos.

The timing couldn’t be worse for Mims. The fourth-year receiver had been having the best training camp of his career, making explosive plays on a daily basis and earning high praise from teammates, including new arrival Jaylen Waddle, who called Mims “a big play always ready to happen” earlier in the week. Mims had been running a more diversified route tree than at any point in his Denver tenure, and there was growing momentum around the idea that new play-caller Davis Webb could finally unlock his full potential as a receiver.

This is now the latest in a string of injury concerns for the Broncos’ offense at camp. Star receiver Jaylen Waddle left practice earlier in the week with a strain, though Sean Payton provided a positive update and expects him back within four to five days. Star outside linebacker Nik Bonitto also dealt with a lower-body issue earlier in camp before returning to practice.

Mims is entering the final year of his rookie contract, making these weeks critical for both his role on the team and any potential extension discussions. Behind Courtland Sutton and Waddle, the battle for the third receiver spot has been one of the most compelling storylines of camp, and Mims was firmly in the mix.
