John Elway shares statement about golf cart mishap that killed friend

John Elway is devastated after the death of his close friend and business associate Jeff Sperbeck, according to 9News.

Sperbeck man died Wednesday, days after falling off a golf cart that was being driven by the former Denver Broncos quarterback.

TMZ first reported the incident, which happened Saturday in Southern California at a gated golf community where Elway owns a house. TMZ reported that the Pro Football Hall of Famer was the one who placed the 9-1-1 call.

Elway shared the following statement with 104.3 the Fan Contributor and 9News’ Mike Klis:

“I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck. There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me. My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff’s wife, Cori; his children Carly, Sam and Jackson; and everyone who knew and loved him. Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.”

Sperbeck was a long-time business partner with Elway and spent 30 years as a football agent. During his time, he represented over 100 players that played in the NFL. He became the manager for Elway’s business and marketing activities in 1991.

Elway and Sperbeck kept a close relationship throughout the years, and the two founded 7Cellars Wine & Spirits in 2015, a company that is present in restaurants and retail stores around the country.
