Greg Penner reiterates the frustrations with new stadium project in Denver

For the second time during training camp, the Broncos expressed how challenging it's been to keep things moving along at the Burnham Yards location

In the early days of training camp, Broncos president Damani Leech addressed the media and spoke about the team’s frustration with their efforts to get a stadium built at the Burnham Yards location in Denver. On Tuesday, it was owner and CEO Greg Penner’s turn to address the situation.

“I think everyone involved with the process has the intent to do the right thing,” he said, being diplomatic about the process. “But it’s a lot of moving pieces. And it is complex.”

Those complexities involve trying to keep a lot of different groups happy. There’s the city. There’s the neighborhood. There’s the people who are selling the land to the Broncos. And the list goes on and on.

Trying to keep everyone on board with the project has led to changes in the design. It’s also put the timeline for the project in jeopardy.

“Our focus is squarely on the 2031 and trying to get that done,” Penner added. “But it’s not going to be easy.”

That leads to frustration. The Broncos want to get shovels in the ground. Other parties have other motivations.

“I don’t know if it’s been more frustrating than I thought,” Penner said, talking about the process. “We went into this knowing that if you’re going to do a project of this scale, we knew when we started focusing on this site specifically, that it was going to be more challenging.”

But they were willing to take on those potential headaches for one reason.

“We really want to stay in Denver if we can and deliver a stadium in this market that is a vital part of the downtown,” Penner continued. “But if you’re doing a project in an area like that, it’s just harder. We went in with our eyes wide open about the challenges and we’ll keep working through it.”

For now, that means chipping away at the challenges. It appears as though Greg Penner and the Broncos are still wanting to make it work at Burnham Yards, even if they do seem to be worn down by the process.
