Greg Penner kicks the can down the road on a Bo Nix extension

Broncos owner Greg Penner spoke to the media at training camp on Tuesday and was asked about a potential contract extension for quarterback Bo Nix. His answer was measured, deliberate and entirely on brand for a franchise focused on winning right now.

Nix is eligible for a rookie extension after this season, his third in Denver, and it seems like an obvious move for a team that has watched him develop into one of the NFL’s brightest young quarterbacks. After leading the Broncos to a 14-3 record and the AFC Championship Game last season, there’s no question Nix is the franchise’s long-term answer under center.

But Penner made it clear the organization isn’t getting ahead of itself.

“Not much at this point,” Penner said when asked how much thought has gone into a possible extension. “You know, obviously, we want Bo here long-term, but we’re really focused on getting ready for this season. You know, putting a competitive team on the field.”

It’s the kind of answer you’d expect from an owner who understands that business discussions can wait when a Super Bowl is the goal. Sean Payton has already said this is one of the teams he’s coached that has a genuine chance to win it all. Nix himself declared at the podium earlier in camp that the Super Bowl is exactly why he plays the game. The entire organization is locked in on 2026.

When it comes to who will ultimately handle the extension talks, Penner deferred to his football people.

“I’ll leave that to obviously George and Sean,” Penner said, referring to general manager George Paton and head coach Payton. “We’ll have conversations about it but I’ll leave that up to them to lead.”

Nix has looked healthy and sharp through training camp, with reporters noting that he’s moving well and performing at a high level after recovering from the broken ankle that ended his 2025 postseason. Payton said earlier in camp that Nix no longer feels like a young quarterback; he commands the huddle and the line of scrimmage like a veteran.

The Broncos’ owners, including Penner and Carrie Walton Penner, were in attendance at Monday’s practice, watching the team prepare for its preseason opener later this week.

The message from the top is simple: Bo Nix is the future. But the future can wait, because the present is all about chasing a championship. If the Broncos accomplish their ultimate goal this season, that extension conversation will take care of itself.
