Florio: Teams likely unwilling to trade good LTs to Broncos

As the offseason rolls on, the Denver Broncos haven’t made any moves to address any perceived hole at left tackle.

The Broncos did not pick up the contract of Russell Okung, the club’s 2016 starter at the position, and he subsequently signed with the Los Angeles Chargers early in free agency.

And while there are still options on the market right now for Denver, most of the highly-sought free agent left tackles have been scooped up.

The Fan’s Tyler Polumbus suggested the Broncos sign former Chargers left tackle King Dunlap, should his former head coach and current Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy sign off on him.

And the Broncos have the options of staying put with who they have, drafting a tackle in a particularly weak class at the position, or making a trade for a big-name left tackle.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, however, said the latter isn’t a likely scenario.

“The Browns seem to perpetually be considering the possibility of trading Joe Thomas. And depending on who you believe, it nearly happened during the 2015 season, with Thomas coming to Denver,” Florio said. “But if you have a good left tackle, you hold on to him.”

Florio, who said he was surprised by the number of available tackles in free agency this year, said teams who have good left tackles aren’t usually “willing to part with them.”

“I think that the teams that truly have the best left tackles aren’t going to be willing to part with them because then they open up a gaping hole their offensive line, and it would be hard to address,” Florio said.

Two weeks into free agency, it remains to be seen what route, if any, the Broncos will take.
