Evans: It’s time to stop playing the “what if” game with the Broncos

It has become trendy around Broncos Country to play the “what if” game when it comes to the quarterback position.

What if the Broncos had drafted Josh Allen? All of our problems would be solved, right?

Well, duh, yeah, the Broncos should’ve drafted Allen. But, we could play this game going back years.

In the end, it’s a giant waste of time. Although it does explain why the Broncos are in the mess they find themselves in.

So here we go. Let’s play!

After winning the Super Bowl, should the Broncos have drafted Dak Prescott? Gary Kubiak liked him. Instead, they drafted Paxton Lynch. Mistake.

When it came time to replace Kubiak, should the Broncos have hired Kyle Shanahan? Yes. Instead they went with Vance Joseph. Mistake.

When John Elway considered firing V.J. after one season, should they have re-hired Mike Shanahan? Yes. Instead Joe Ellis put the kibosh on that and they kept Vance around longer than they should have. Mistake.

When the 2017 draft rolled around, should the Broncos have recognized Lynch was a bust and moved up to draft Patrick Mahomes or Deshaun Watson? Yes. Mistake.

As these mistakes started to pile up along with the losses, should the Broncos have fired or re-assigned Elway? Yes. Mistake.

Which brings us to the decision to pass on Allen. Sure, the revisionist history crowd (step forward DMac) has a field day with this.

Of course, Allen wasn’t nearly as highly touted as the armchair QBs would have you believe. But, that’s not the point. Yeah, they should’ve drafted him. However, as this little exercise has proven, that is but just one “would’ve, could’ve, should’ve” move the Broncos missed on over the last five years. It explains why they’re where they’re at.

Hopefully five years from now, there won’t be so many regrets.
