DMac: DeMarcus Ware injury not the ‘worst thing’ for Broncos

Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak revealed that DeMarcus Ware will undergo surgery for a fractured forearm Tuesday, an injury he suffered in Sunday’s 34-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

The timetable for Ware’s return is an estimated four to five weeks, Kubiak said.

But could Ware’s time away from the field be more of a blessing in disguise than a curse?

“I don’t think it’s the worst thing in the world, and here’s why. I think the NFL season is so arduous, if you have a good team, it’s better to have your best players ready later in the season than earlier if you can sort of survive that early run,” 104.3 The Fan’s DMac said Monday on “The Drive with Big Al and DMac.”

In 2015, Ware missed the final five games of the regular season before coming back with a vengeance during the playoffs. In three postseason games, Ware earned 3.5 sacks, including a 2-sack performance in Super Bowl 50 that would have likely netted him MVP honors had Von Miller not been Von Miller.

Ware missed each of the Broncos’ four preseason games, and much of the offseason workouts, with a back injury, and the perennial All-Pro likely will miss at least another month with the forearm fracture.

But, DMac said, this could be a positive, to sit Ware down and get him healthy for the team’s stretch run.

“I don’t think it’s that big of a deal because the Broncos are good enough to play winning football without him, and he’ll come back,” DMac said. “I think that is a trend, and will become a trend, with veteran players as things go on because it’s such a long season.”

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter told the show Monday the Broncos don’t need to have Ware right now, and the depth chart opening will give younger players much-needed reps.

“You’re probably better off that you get some of these guys some work out there. And it’s a situation where that’s exactly what’s going to happen,” Schefter said. “Now with DeMarcus Ware having surgery for his fractured forearm tomorrow — he’ll be out five weeks, six weeks — there’ll be work for other people.”
