Broncos nearing contract extension with Courtland Sutton

Bo Nix’s top target is sticking in Broncos Country for the long haul, it seems. The Denver Broncos and Courtland Sutton are nearing a resolution on the wide receiver’s contract, Sean Payton shared on Monday.

Sutton is at training camp while the two sides work on business, but the longtime Broncos pass catcher isn’t participating in all of the drills.

“He’s gotten reps, he’s gotten limited reps, and I think we’re close,” Payton said. “I’m not going to speak ahead of it, but we’re really close on a contract. And I think our goal, when he and I met George (Paton) all along, was this coming Monday. So I think there’ll be something fairly soon.”

Sutton, 29, is in the final year of a four-year $61 million contract that carries a cap hit of $20 million this fall. A year ago, Sutton stayed away from the Broncos during the voluntary portion of the team’s offseason because he was trying to get a new deal. The extension didn’t come, but the Broncos did add some performance incentives. And earned $1.5 million in total incentives thanks to a monster season.

The sides aren’t yet pressed to get the deal done, but are making a ton of progress.

“Courtland is really smart. He’s been participating in all the individual one-on-one. He’s gotten seven-on-seven work. He’s gotten team reps, he’s just being smart, and so it’d be different if you felt like he was missing improvement, or not being out here, or just being out here riding the bike or something. So I kind of know that player well enough to feel real good about where he’s at in his mindset both mentally and physically.”

Sutton caught a career-best 81 passes in 2024. He produced 1,081 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, which were each the second-highest season totals of his seven-year career. All the while, he became Nix’s favorite target, catching many tight-window passes from the rookie.

“Like any player, he’s dealt with some injuries. There are certain years, his 2019 film was outstanding, his film last year, finding that right weight and balance, Payton said. “One of the things that he does well, certainly, he’s a strong target. He’s smart. He’s one of our leaders on this team. So there are a lot of things that he brings to the table.”

Payton’s words were backed by NFL insider Jordan Schultz, who reported on Monday that a deal “should get done ‘sooner than later.'”

Sutton has always said he wants to finish his career in Denver, so his extension may run long enough to reflect that once the details emerge.
