Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Davis Webb has been much discussed by the fanbase early in the season.
He’s taken over play-calling for head coach Sean Payton and so far the results have been a mixed bag.
Week 1 in Kansas City was ugly all around, but Week 2 and Week 3 rallies against the Jaguars and Rams have Broncos Country feeling a bit better.
Still, fans want to see consistency, especially early in games. Denver has only 10 points in the first half through three games, including zero last week. The Broncos rallied with 30 second half points to top Los Angeles 30-26 in a thriller.
On Thursday, Webb was asked what hasn’t been clicking from the jump for the offense.
“I think it’s collective. I think everyone plays a part in it. Whether that be drops, missed assignments or just them making a good play. Like, that’s a really good defense we just played in L.A., the week before was Jacksonville, the week before that was Kansas City. So, three really, really good teams,” Davis Webb said.
Yes, the Broncos schedule has been brutal, but if they want to win a Super Bowl or even come close these are the kinds of teams they’ll face down the road.
Webb didn’t shy away from the elephant in the room, which is quicker starts are desperately needed.
“We’ve got to come out of the gate obviously a lot faster. But man, you can’t argue the resiliency and what’s been basically the tradition here in regards to coming out of halftime like their hair’s on fire. So hopefully we wake up with that intensity in San Francisco,” Davis Webb said.
The 49ers offense was a machine in September, helping them get off to a 3-0 start. If the Broncos want to pull the small upset on Sunday, it could be in a shootout style of game.
But most importantly for Davis Webb and the entire Denver offense is scoring points early. The huge comebacks are fun, but almost certainly not sustainable all season long.
