Davis: ‘I’m going into Canton,’ Broncos teammates ‘going in (too)’

Since the news came down of Terrell Davis’ election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the former Denver Broncos running back has been on “Cloud 9.”

“I’ve just been floating. A ton of emotions, gratitude, obviously, excitement, jubilation, joy, happiness, relief … a lot of mixed emotions run through you,” Davis told “Schlereth and Evans” on Wednesday.

It’s a special moment for the prolific rusher who had been waiting as a finalist for his name to be called for three years (eight as a semifinalist before that) — special because the uphill battle he had to climb due to his promising career being cut short due to injury.

But “special” is the word Davis used to describe the men who helped pave a path — figuratively and metaphorically — for his induction into the Hall of Fame.

“People want to put somebody on a pedestal, just one person, but they leave a lot of people out when they do that,” Davis said.

Among the many people who aided Davis to his eventual enshrinement, he pointed out with “The Drive” on Wednesday the likes of former Broncos fullback Howard Griffith, tackles Tony Jones and Gary Zimmerman, center Tom Nalen, wide receiver Ed McCaffrey and Rod Smith, and tight end Shannon Sharpe (who sang TD’s praises Tuesday on The Fan).

And Mark Schlereth.

Similar to the sentiment he expressed upon Davis’ selection last weekend, Schlereth said he was so proud of his former teammate that he almost felt like he was a part of his Hall of Fame bid.

“I feel like I went into the Hall of Fame,” the “Schlereth and Evans” co-host said Wednesday.

You did, and you should feel that way, man, because, without you, there is no me,” Davis responded.

“Yes, man, you have a piece of this bust. You have a piece of this ring and a piece of this gold jacket. So be proud, brother,” he added.

And Davis felt similarly of his other former teammates.

“I’m going into Canton, but those guys are going in (too). They have a piece of that,” Davis said. “And they should feel like they have a piece of that, and feel good about that because they certainly deserve it.”
