Clayton: Jerry Jeudy is getting high marks during Broncos OTAs

Despite the tweaked hamstring for K.J. Hamler and Courtland Sutton’s recovery from last year’s ACL tear, things apparently look good for the Broncos pass catchers in 2021.

Jerry Jeudy is showing more confidence and is advancing well in his second season. Tight end Noah Fant is doing well at the OTAs. Tim Patrick remains the sleeper who was so valuable to the team last year.

Jeudy spoke to the media on Wednesday and he sounded like a player poised for a breakout season.

“I feel like I’ve matured,” Jeudy said. “You don’t know what you’re getting yourself into during your first season of doing something. This is my second year and I feel like I have learned a lot from my first year. I know how to overcome whatever I had in past years to make this year better.”

I recall my many calls to Alabama before Jeudy was drafted in 2020. The Crimson Tide were blessed with two first-round receivers that year – Jeudy and Henry Ruggs. My big question was, Who was the No. 1 receiver? The conversations suggested that it was close.

The more I asked, the more I had people say Jeudy. Ruggs had great speed and the Las Vegas Raiders drafted him before the Broncos. That let Jeudy fall into Denver’s lap.

Talking to scouts, they compared him to Marvin Harrison, the Hall of Fame wide receiver for the Indianapolis Colts. Jeudy has a good answer about his improvement.

“Route running – just knowing when not to do too much and knowing well to do just the right amount,” Jeudy said. “That’s the biggest thing, really. Just knowing the timing of the play and knowing what you can and cannot do on that play. That’s basically it.”

If you are judging Jeudy in this year’s OTA, he gets an A grade. That bodes well for the Broncos passing game in 2021.
