Clayton: Depth at linebacker has become a major concern for Broncos

The Broncos shouldn’t have any concerns for their home opener.

They are playing the New York Jets. The Jets look even worse than the team that won only two games last year.

They have major problems on the offensive line. They are weak at cornerback. Zach Wilson has thrown five interceptions and is trying to do more than he should.

This should be an easy victory, but there is one concern for the Broncos – depth at linebacker.

Bradley Chubb is out six to eight weeks after having bone spurs taken out of his ankle. Josey Jewell is most likely out for the season with his torn pec. On Friday, Malik Reed missed practice because of a family matter and his status is uncertain for Sunday. Reed is Chubb’s replacement.

The Broncos defense was deep enough to handle the early waive of injuries. They lost their best cornerback (Ronald Darby), but they were four deep at cornerback.

But linebacker is being a big concern. It won’t hurt them in Sunday’s game, but it is watching for a much tougher October schedule.

When a team loses linebackers, it loses more depth on special teams and special teams has been a big concern for Vic Fangio. The Broncos have to hope Reed’s family problems aren’t bad and that he could play Sunday.
