Kubiak: ‘Fingers crossed’ after Broncos Walker leaves practice

The Denver Broncos defense took some blows in the offseason, losing some key pieces to free agency — Malik Jackson, Danny Trevathan, etc. — but another may have come Monday on the first snap of practice.

Defensive end Vance Walker, the man slated to fill Jackson’s role in the top-ranked Denver defense, left on a cart after an apparent knee injury and will undergo further testing.

Walker moved into the starting role following Jackson’s departure and had been standing out in training camp to this point.

Head coach Gary Kubiak said after practice that Walker would likely undergo an MRI and there’s not much he nor the team could do but “sit here and hope for the best.”

“Fingers crossed,” Kubiak said.

The injury comes on the heels of the Broncos waiving defensive end Kenny Anunike last week and placing defensive tackle Phil Taylor on injured reserve early in camp.

Walker’s backed up by Jared Crick, who signed a two-year deal with the team this offseason after playing for Houston since 2012.
