Broncos waive oldest player in franchise history

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Broncos waived veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis on Thursday, not even one week after promoting him to their 53-man roster so they could use him last Sunday in their win at Las Vegas.

The 41-year-old Lewis became the oldest player in Broncos history when he made his on-field debut Nov. 2 against the Houston Texans as a practice-squad elevation. The team elevated him for its subsequent two games prior to its Week 12 bye.

By waiving Lewis, the Broncos offered a strong indication that third-year veteran Nate Adkins will make his return Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. Adkins has not played since suffering a knee injury Oct. 26 against the Dallas Cowboys, but he returned to practice Wednesday on a limited basis.

Denver signed Lewis to its practice squad in the wake of Adkins’ injury. The team maxed out its per-player allotment of practice-squad elevations on Lewis last month, which is why it signed him to the 53-player roster last Saturday while Adkins completed his recovery.

Should Lewis clear waivers, the Broncos are expected to sign him back to their practice squad, although they would need to release a player to make room for him, as they currently have the maximum of 17 players there after signing wide receiver Kyrese Rowan and running back Sincere McCormick on Tuesday.
