The Denver Broncos have the best cornerback in the NFL.
ESPN is releasing its annual list of the top-10 players at each position as voted on by league executives, coaches and scouts. And Broncos star Pat Surtain II tops the NFL, with praise rolling in for the former Defensive Player of the Year.
“It’s not close,” a seasoned coordinator told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. “A generational player. Watch the AFC Championship Game. He was the best player on the field by far.”
The Broncos unfortunately lost to the Patriots 10-7 that day, but it certainly wasn’t the fault of Surtain or Denver’s defense. They were excellent. However a bad turnover by backup QB Jarrett Stidham gifted New England seven points and that proved to be enough to send them to the Super Bowl.
Surtain is No. 1 and received more than 75 percent of the first-place votes. Derek Stingley Jr. from the Texans, Christian Gonzalez with the Patriots, Devon Witherspoon of the Seahawks and Trent McDuffie from the Rams rounded out the top-5. Former CU Buffs star Travis Hunter also received votes.
“If you went in a lab and made the ideal cornerback, it’d be Patrick Surtain,” an NFC personnel evaluator told Fowler.
It’s high praise for “PS2” who ultimately doesn’t create a lot of debate. He’s a quiet superstar and universally respected around the league. And this nugget from Fowler continues to show his value.
“When lined up against the game’s best — Cincinnati’s Ja’Marr Chase in Week 4 — Surtain allowed one reception for 8 yards across 13 coverage matchups. And his 12 interceptions over five seasons are a reminder that ball production is not a problem,” Fowler wrote.
The Broncos are lucky that their defense is elite and the Surtain is a huge part of it. To see the full list of the top-10 cornerbacks in the NFL, click here.
