Broncos’ Singleton fined for unnecessary-roughness infraction in Week 1

For Broncos inside linebacker Alex Singleton, a rough Week 1 and its aftermath got worse Saturday, hitting him squarely in the wallet.

The NFL fined Singleton $11,941 for the unnecessary-roughness penalty for which he was whistled on the first play of the fourth quarter of the Broncos’ 31-10 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night.

Singleton was fined for a hit on Chiefs running back Emmett Johnson, who earlier in the play had broken a tackle attempt from the veteran inside linebacker. Johnson had already been brought down inside the 5-yard line, and Singleton dove at the rookie running back while he was beginning to rise after the play.

This is the third fine for Singleton since he joined the Broncos in 2022. He was fined $23,186 for impermissible use of the helmet last year against Jacksonville and $6,194 for a hit on a defenseless receiver during a 2022 game at Baltimore.

Singleton had four missed tackles Monday night, per data compiled by Sport Radar. That matches a career-high tally, also set in the Broncos’ loss at Detroit in 2023 and in a 2021 game against Las Vegas while he was with the Philadelphia Eagles. Three days after the game, his agent, Paul Sheehy, caused a social-media kerfuffle with a post on the social-media platform formerly known as Twitter referring to the “sheer ignorance” and “incompetence” of “Broncos bloggers and self proclaimed journalists.”

Perhaps no player on the Broncos roster is more eager to turn the page to Sunday’s game against Jacksonville.
