Should the Broncos pursue veteran Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo?

In a statement Tuesday, Tony Romo made it known that though competition still burns inside him still, rookie quarterback Dak Prescott has earned the right to start for the Dallas Cowboys.

Romo returns after breaking a bone in his back during the preseason to a team that’s 8-1, thanks in part to the play of Prescott, whom ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter told 104.3 The Fan on Monday.

But in his statement, Romo said that though he’s stepping aside, his competitive fire still fuels him, maybe even more than ever.

“As hard as that is for me to say, he’s earned that right. He’s guided our team to an 8-1 record, and that’s hard to do,” Romo said. “If you think for a second that I don’t want to be out there, then you’ve probably never felt the pure ecstasy of competing and winning. That hasn’t left me. In fact it may burn more now than ever.”

And with that competitiveness still inside Romo, Sports Radio 104.3 The Fan’s “The Drive” co-host DMac posed the question Tuesday: Should the Denver Broncos make a run at the veteran quarterback?

“When you have a talent player who’s a veteran, and that guy still has juice, you have to go and give that guy a chance, especially if he’s trending toward Hall of Fame,” said Alfred Williams, co-host of “The Drive.”

And The Fan’s Broncos Insider Cecil Lammey agreed, saying that with the Broncos still in a playoff window and having a model on how to bring in veteran star quarterbacks — see Peyton Manning — should upgrade at any position if they can, even with young quarterbacks like Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch already on the roster.

“Again, I want to see Paxton Lynch in there some day. Today’s he’s got Marcus Mariota-like ability. If he hits, he’s got Ben Roethlisberger or Cam Newton to his game — a little bit of both. That’s pretty high potential, but you know what you have right now in Romo,” Lammey said.
