Broncos owner Greg Penner talks about roof plan at possible new stadium

Denver Broncos owner and CEO Greg Penner was a major part of a huge announcement last month.

The Broncos have decided Burnham Yard is their preferred site for an incredible new stadium. The goal is to be playing home games there by the fall of 2031, with the stadium having a retractable roof. The project will be privately funded.

Of course fans were excited by the news, as the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group hasn’t cut any corners since buying the team in 2022. In fact between this, a state-of-the-art new practice facility and a slew of other things, Greg Penner and the rest of the WPFOG are pouring a ton of money into the franchise.

But one question that arose with a retractable roof was would that take away Denver’s homefield advantage? Many in Broncos Country are passionate about the team playing in the elements, something they’re more prepared for than most visitors.

Penner met with the media in London on Friday ahead of the team’s game with the New York Jets this weekend. Per The Denver Gazette’s Chris Tomasson, he made an interesting comment on their plans.

That’s awesome to hear from Greg Penner.

The roof can help attract events like the Super Bowl, Final Fours and concerts year-round, but when the Broncos play, it’ll likely be open. Sure, if there’s two feet of snow, it can be closed. But a couple of inches against the Raiders in December? Let it breathe.

“As we’re thinking about the stadium, our first and primary focus is on what’s best for our team, our players and our fans. Then you get to the next step of okay, we want to have some flexibility,” Penner said per Tomasson. “It’s the reason we’re looking at a retractable roof. Our intent is for our football games to be played with the roof open in the elements and the exception will be to close the roof. But it would give… the flexibility of events like Super Bowl.”

You have to love it, as this is exactly what the majority of fans seem to want.

If Denver can attract major events, that’s great. But also Broncos football in the Mile High City should almost exclusively be played outdoors.

It sounds like that’s the goal for Greg Penner a few years down the road once this all comes to fruition.
