Broncos lose tight ends coach to Bears

The Denver Broncos saw another member of their football operation leave Sunday.

Tight ends coach Declan Doyle, who came aboard the Broncos staff when Sean Payton arrived as head coach two years ago, will join the Chicago Bears as their offensive coordinator under new head coach Ben Johnson. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport first reported the move.

Doyle joined the Broncos after four seasons on the New Orleans Saints staff as an offensive assistant. Three of those years were under Payton. The 2022 campaign saw Doyle work under Dennis Allen, who is reportedly also headed to the Bears as their new defensive coordinator.

Johnson didn’t work under Payton or Allen, but he did spend the last three seasons as Detroit Lions offensive coordinator under Dan Campbell, who worked five seasons under Payton in New Orleans and also concluded his playing career with the Payton-led Saints in 2009.

Doyle will not call plays in Chicago, meaning the offensive-coordinator role there will be similar to the job held by Joe Lombardi with the Broncos. But it still represents a step forward for the 28-year-old Doyle, who was a student assistant at the University of Iowa before being into the NFL six years ago.

The departure of Doyle follows the New York Jets’ hiring of assistant general manager Darren Mougey for their general-manager role. Mougey will work with new Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, another former Payton assistant.
