Just a few days removed from Gary Kubiak stepping down as the head coach of the Denver Broncos, the organization began interviewing candidates to replace him on Friday.

General manager John Elway and company traveled to Kansas City to meet with special teams coordinator Dave Toub, wrapping up about midafternoon on Friday.

Mike Klis, 9News Broncos Insider, said Elway was among a five-person contingent from Denver which included president and CEO Joe Ellis,  director of player personnel Matt Russell, director of team administration Mark Thewes, and vice president of public relations Patrick Smyth.

The team also headed to Atlanta on Saturday to meet with Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

According to a report from NFL Network, Shanahan has been eyeing the Broncos job as his top choice.

Denver will also interview Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who Klis said is the team’s leading candidate, on Tuesday after a AFC wild card round loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Information:

The Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator interviewed for the Broncos head coach opening in 2015 and was targeted for defensive coordinator when the team hired Gary Kubiak. The team will interview Joseph Tuesday after the Dolphins wild card round loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. According to 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis, Joseph is Denver’s leading candidate.

Kyle Shanahan

Atlanta Falcons/Offensive coordinator

Information:

Wrapping up his second regular season with the Atlanta Falcons (his ninth as an NFL offensive coordinator), Shanahan has his unit scoring a league-best 33.5 points per game and the second-most yards per game (412.5).  The Broncos interviewed Shanahan on Saturday in Atlanta, with the Falcons having a first-round bye in the NFC Playoffs. According to a report from NFL Network. the young offensive coordinator is said to be eyeing Denver as his top destination.

Kansas City Chiefs/Special teams coodinator

Information:

Toub has been the Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator since the arrival of head coach Andy Reid in 2013. Since then, he’s lead his unit to top 10 finishes in special teams rankings each season, finishing No. 3 in the NFL in 2013. The Broncos spent four hours interviewing Toub on Friday, which 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis called “encouraging” for the coach, as non-serious candidate interviews typically last 2-3 hours.
