Broncos linebacker Dre Greenlaw has suspension upheld on appeal

The Broncos will officially have to face the explosive Dallas Cowboys’ offense without inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw.

Tuesday, the NFL upheld the one-game suspension issued to the free-agent pickup for an incident immediately following the Broncos’ 33-32 win over the New York Giants.

Greenlaw appealed the punishment, which the league issued after claiming that Greenlaw “verbally threatened” referee Brad Allen in the midst of the on-field chaos after Wil Lutz’s game-winning, walk-off field goal to cap the Broncos’ rally from a 19-point fourth-quarter deficit.

Broncos players poured onto the field to celebrate the kick, with Allen appearing to shove Justin Strnad away after the inside linebacker leapt toward the referee. As Allen toward the southwest tunnel of Empower Field at Mile High, Greenlaw followed him and yelled at him.

Allen and the officiating crew were at the center of a controversial pass-inference call against Broncos cornerback Riley Moss moments earlier, a penalty which led to a Jaxson Dart touchdown run that briefly put the Giants in front, 32-20.

Greenlaw played 21 snaps in making his regular-season debut after missing the first six weeks of the season due to quadriceps issues that first arose in April. He missed all of the Broncos’ offseason work before taking the field at the start of training camp, but he aggravated the quad injury in practice on July 31.

With Greenlaw suspended, Justin Strnad is expected to return to the first team. He started in place of Greenlaw in Weeks 1-6.
