Broncos GM George Paton says players ‘will want to be here’

Denver Broncos GM George Paton doesn’t meet with the media often.

So hearing from him is a bit of a treat, even given the circumstances.

The Broncos were hoping to host a parade in a couple of weeks, but that’s not going to happen after a frustrating 10-7 loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Title Game.

A number of things went wrong, including a questionable fourth-down decision from head coach Sean Payton. But the reality is Denver was in trouble from the moment it was revealed Bo Nix had fractured his ankle. That’s the reason this season came up short.

Still, there’s plenty to look forward to, including NFL free agency which will begin in March. Denver definitely has some needs. And while George Paton didn’t get into those specifically, he did say something on Tuesday that will have fans excited.

“I think players will want to come here for a number of reasons. I think No. 1 is ownership, that’s No. 1 and you can see what they’ve done, what they’re doing and what they continue to do. And all the resources and leadership they’ve shown,” Paton said.

He’s talking about the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group which hasn’t cut any corners since buying the team. They’ve done everything right, from a new practice facility to eventually a new stadium. You can tell George Paton is glad he works for them.

Plus, the development of Nix. He led the Broncos to a 14-3 season and the No. 1 seed in the AFC. If he doesn’t get hurt against the Bills, fans are likely making Super Bowl plans.

“I think quarterback makes a big difference. Players wanting to come with the quarterback and the fanbase and Denver, people love it here. And I think that helps and now we’re playing at a high level and again it starts over. But I think players will want to be here,” Paton said.

We’ll see what George Paton has up his sleeve when it comes to adding free agents. But there’s no doubt his comments make it sound like Denver will be a destination for big names this offseason.

Now, he and the staff have to get it done, making a few key moves that can get the Broncos over the top.
