Broncos get a jump on free agency by keeping one of their players off the market

The NFL’s tampering period doesn’t start until tomorrow, but the Broncos got a jump on inking players with a weekend move. On Sunday, they reached an agreement with one of their own, re-signing Justin Strnad before the linebacker could hit the open market.

Strnad was drafted in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Broncos. During his five seasons in Denver, he’s been a versatile player on a defense and a standout special teamer.

Last season, the linebacker got the chance to start eight games while Dre Greenlaw and Alex Sington were out of the lineup at various times. He recorded 58 tackles, a career-high 4.5 sacks and hauled in his first interception.

The signing likely doesn’t squelch the Broncos interest in other free-agent linebackers. Strnad is seen as more of a depth player than a bonafide starter. But he’s a key member of the Denver defense that the organization was willing to invest in.
