Country-music star Morgan Wallen didn’t disappoint his fans when he stepped onto the stage at Empower Field at Mile High on Friday night — and he didn’t let down Coloradans who expected a local icon for his walkout as he took the stage.
He chose the most significant player in the history of the Denver Broncos: John Elway.

Wallen usually heads for the stage escorted by a person of major significance to the market in which he’s performing. For example, when he performed at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., he was joined by Peyton Manning, who played four years in that venue for the University of Tennessee.
So, when you’re playing at the longtime home of the Broncos, it doesn’t get bigger than Elway, the man who was the team’s quarterback for 16 seasons and chief football executive for 10 more. In both positions, he guided the club to world championships in Super Bowls XXXII, XXXIII and 50.
Wallen performs again at Empower Field on Saturday night.
The only question now is, who will he choose for an encore? Because in Colorado sports, it’s hard to get any bigger than The Duke of Denver.
