Broncos release Ehlinger in move that could lead to activation of Greenlaw

The Broncos may have given the strongest sign yet that Dre Greenlaw’s debut is finally imminent.

Friday, they released No. 3 quarterback Sam Ehlinger, clearing a spot on the 53-player roster. In order to activate Greenlaw from the practice squad, they needed to create a roster vacancy.

Often, teams will make the corresponding roster move for a player returning from injured reserve on the same day. But for the Broncos to have Ehlinger available for Sunday’s game as the No. 3 emergency quarterback, they needed to release him Friday so they could sign him to the practice squad one day later.

As a vested veteran, Ehlinger is not subject to the waiver-claim process. Thus, he has full control over his next move. Were he on waivers, a team could claim him and have his rights.

By being released instead of waived, Ehlinger can simply choose to sign with the Broncos’ practice squad — as he did when the team released him at the roster deadline when the preseason concluded, spurning other offers.

The Broncos can still use Ehlinger as their emergency No. 3 quarterback by elevating him from the practice squad.

BRONCOS RAMPED UP GREENLAW THIS WEEK

Greenlaw returned to practice Wednesday for his first on-field work since Sept. 12. He saw limited work Wednesday and Thursday, but had full participation in Friday afternoon’s session.

The offseason free-agent signee hasn’t played a game-time snap this season. He’s dealt with quadriceps issues since straining the muscle during an April workout.

Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph indicated that if Greenlaw plays Sunday against the New York Giants, it will be in a “part-time” role.

“We’ll see. We’re not sure that’s going to happen this weekend or next, but he’s in good spirits, he’s worked hard, he’s in the right mindset,” Joseph said Thursday.
