If Broncos OC, Brady Quinn would put ‘a lot more’ on Siemian’s plate

When asked to don Mike McCoy’s visor and play offensive coordinator, former Denver Broncos quarterback Brady Quinn told 104.3 The Fan that he’d add more to Trevor Siemian’s responsibilities.

On with Brian Noe, filling in for Sandy Clough, Quinn said he’d thought he could work out a “check with me” system with Siemian, along with building in a “number of plays” in which he could trust him to get into the right play because “he’s got more experience.”

“Not only has he been in the NFL longer, he had a year under Peyton Manning, so he’s got that kind of tutelage, and I think he’s probably got a stronger grasp of what defenses are trying to do, Quinn said. “So, I feel like I can take my hands off of the steering wheel and let Trevor Siemian drive in that system, allowing him to control more.”

“It’s not anything against his physical abilities,” Quinn said of Siemian. “I think he can make all the throws and do all of that, and he’s a good enough athlete, too, to pick up ground with his legs when he needs to, but he doesn’t have the same ceiling that Paxton Lynch does.

“So, because of that, he has to make up for it with the mental side of the game. So that’s how I’d kind of prepare my offense for Trevor Siemian.”

Quinn said he’d probably give Lynch more freedom in the future as well, but that the second-year quarterback would need to “earn” it first.

“As far as the audibles and the ‘check with me’ systems that they have in place, I think I would have to see it a few times to feel much more comfortable with putting more on his plate,” Quinn said.

How he would approach Lynch currently, Quinn said he’d highlight what the young gunslinger does best: utilize his “big arm.”

“… Whatever you can do to really feel like the defense has to play back on its heels because they’ve got a guy who can heave the ball 60-65 yards to one of their talented wide receivers and make big plays,” Quinn said.

“And I think that would be what I try to utilize, the running game, play-action pass, try to simplify things early on, and then really open up the playbook to Paxton Lynch once I feel like he’s earned that.”
