Broncos are going to have to deal with Patrick Mahomes for even longer

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has had a lot of success against the Denver Broncos in his career.

And the Broncos are going to have to deal with Mahomes for even longer.

On Wednesday, news broke that Mahomes has agreed to a new contract that now ties him to the Chiefs through the 2033 NFL season. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the deal with some eye-popping financials as well.

Record deal: The Chiefs are adding two years to Patrick Mahomes’ contract, tying him to Kansas City through the 2033 season at a value of $504.75 million, making it the first NFL deal valued at over a half-billion dollars, per @RapSheet and me.

Schefter adds that “all $504.75 million becomes guaranteed through contract mechanisms” for Mahomes and that he can earn up to $18 million more through incentives and escalators.

This extension for Mahomes basically assures he’ll play his entire career in K.C. — which means two showdowns with the Broncos in the AFC West for years to come.

And the future Hall of Fame QB and three-time Super Bowl champion has been very good against the Broncos in his career. He’s 13-2 overall, although both losses have come in two of the last three times that Denver and Kansas City met with Mahomes on the field.

The Broncos beat him 24-9 at Empower Field at Mile High in 2023 then 22-19 in a memorable game last season. It was the first time in his career that Bo Nix had topped Mahomes, something that also should’ve happened in his rookie season, but Denver had a field goal blocked at the buzzer.

It’s good the Broncos have finally found the QB that can compete with Mahomes, but he might go down as the best ever when it’s all said and done. Seeing him twice a year between now and 2033 is hardly good news.

Mahomes couldn’t play against Denver on Christmas last season after suffering ACL and LCL injuries. But all signs point toward him being back for Week 1 when the Broncos travel to Arrowhead to kick off the 2026 season.

Buckle up, Mahomes isn’t going anywhere for a long, long time. And the Chiefs are paying him more than a half-billion to make sure that remains the case.
