The Broncos have their punter: Matt Haack

Matt Haack will be the Denver Broncos’ punter, and he’s someone that new special-teams coordinator Darren Rizzi knows well.

Haack agreed to a contract with the Broncos, as Mike Klis of KUSA-Ch. 9 was first to report, filling the void created last week when Riley Dixon signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Broncos subsequently made a play for recent second-team All-Pro Bryan Anger, but he elected to remain with the Dallas Cowboys.

The 30-year-old Matt Haack broke into the NFL with the Miami Dolphins in 2017, when their special-teams coordinator was Rizzi, who now holds that role with the Broncos, having officially joined Sean Payton’s staff last month.

After four seasons with the Dolphins, Haack has lived the life of the peripatetic punter since then, booting for the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns and New York Giants since then. He has just 5 games of work over the last two seasons — 1 game in 2023 with the Browns and 4 last year with the Giants.

Haack’s 21 punts last year just barely put him over the 20-punt threshold, placing him among 34 punters with at least 20 punts for the season. Among those 34 punters, he held the following rankings in six key metrics:

• Gross average: 18
• Net average: 31
• Touchback percentage: 11
• Inside-the-20 percentage: 14
• Hang time: 22
• Percentage of punts returned: 19

That’s an average ranking of 19.2, placing Haack slightly below the mean.

In seven seasons with at least 20 punts, Matt Haack has had a season-long net average of over 40 yards once and a gross average of at least 45 yards once.
