Bo Nix on extension talk: ‘You got to go out there and continue to earn it’

Bo Nix isn’t losing sleep over a new deal — he’s busy trying to earn it.

The Denver Broncos quarterback, entering Year 3 on a rookie contract that runs through 2027, addressed extension chatter at training camp Saturday.

“There’s only 32 people in my position, and many others that are trying to get in that same position,” Nix said. “No days can you take off, and no days can you come out here and give half effort or not be prepared.”

Nix becomes extension-eligible in January, and the price tag figures to be significant given the current QB market. His cap hit this season? Just over $5 million. That’s a steal Denver knows it can’t keep forever.

But Sean Payton made clear he’s not thinking about it right now — or anytime soon.

“I’m gonna be honest. Right at this stage of the season, those things are like 179 and 180 on my list of to-do things,” Payton said of extensions for Nix and safety Brandon Jones. “As we get started here, George and I and the powers that be will meet and begin discussing certain players. But right now, there’s so many other things we’re focused on.”

That’s fine with Nix, who’s back as a full participant after the ankle injury that clouded his offseason. He’s treating 2026 the way he treats every year — like he’s got something to prove, even after leading his team to the AFC Championship Game.

“You can’t ever let up and think, ‘I’ve made it,'” Nix said. “There’s always the next season. There’s always the next championship you go after.”

The extension will come in time, especially if the Broncos keep progressing with Nix under center.
