For Bo Nix in his recovery from January’s ankle injury, the Broncos say things are progressing well — though an additional procedure along the way could affect his offseason availability.

The Broncos’ starting quarterback underwent a successful follow-up clean-up procedure on his surgically-repaired ankle during a scheduled re-check with Dr. Norman Waldrop last week, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo first reported the procedure, with 9NEWS’ Mike Klis later confirming the news through a source. The procedure was anticipated and is not unusual following a fractured ankle, according to Rapoport, who added that Nix remains firmly on track to be ready for the start of training camp.

However, his availability for the Broncos’ offseason program is now in question, per Klis.

“Bo Nix’s recovery remains on track with a follow-up procedure,” Garafolo posted on social media. “The Broncos QB will continue his rehab as he works to get back on the field this spring.”

The Broncos are expected to be conservative with Nix’s participation during the offseason program, per the reports, but his progress in recovery has been strong.

Sean Payton said after the NFL Draft concluded Saturday afternoon that his quarterback had his ankle rechecked, but did not note a procedure, nor that Nix is now a possibility to miss OTAs.

“He had a recheck that was scheduled,” Payton said. “He’s doing great. We’re excited about his progress. Nothing to report. These guys will be coming in here. He’s here.”

The Broncos have targeted the start of OTAs for Nix’s return from the injury, which he suffered in overtime of the team’s divisional-round loss to the Buffalo Bills on Jan. 17.

The team will reconvene for club-organized offseason workouts on Monday, May 4, but its first OTA practices will not take place until just over four weeks later, on June 2.

“Guys will be working on Monday [May 4] and then probably more of a team meeting next week,” Payton said. “Probably in the prior two years, we would have been out on the field and you guys would have been out there with us in May. It’s kicked back a little, so that will take place in June.”
