Clough: Broncos’ Trevor Siemian ‘looked ‘better, more comfortable’ last year

After an off day on Tuesday, the Denver Broncos returned to UCHealth Training Center by most accounts flat.

Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak even indicated as much following the morning practice, saying the team came back “lethargic.”

“We had a day off yesterday, and we didn’t respond very well,” Kubiak said. “Good teams, when you get a break day and come back, are bouncing around. We came back lethargic, not practicing very well and not practicing very well at quarterback today. I just let them know.”

During practice, Sports Radio 104.3 The Fan’s Sandy Clough noted –– following a short pass that skipped to the receive –– that second-year quarterback Trevor Siemian perhaps looked more comfortable during his rookie training camp than now, as he competes for the starting job against veteran Mark Sanchez and rookie Paxton Lynch.

“I thought Trevor Siemian out here last year throughout the course of camp, including the first week, looked better, looked more comfortable that he looks this year,” Clough said.

Clough did caution that it is just a handful of days into the 2016 training camp, but The Fan’s Football Insider Cecil Lammey championed a similar sentiment.

“He was a different guy last year. And obviously the arm talent shows through; I’ve got enough issues with his consistency and accuracy. But I think it’s really the mental pressure,” Lammey said. “That’s what it has to be, because now he’s in a position where he’s competing for the starting job.”

Kubiak did indicate Siemian and Sanchez were equal in the race to be the team’s starter Week 1 heading into training camp.

Through the first week, however, none of the three quarterbacks have been announced as the team’s starter.
