Clayton: After busy news day, NFL world turns eyes to Rodgers

On the eve of decision day for Aaron Rodgers to decide if he’s going to opt out for the season or go ahead with his plans to hold out and try to force a trade, the NFL had a busy news day.

First, the league wrapped up a one-year investigation of the Washington Football Team. The investigating firm interviewed more than 150 people and determined the workplace environment for women was highly unprofessional. There was bullying, intimidation and sexual harassment.

During the past couple years, owner Dan Snyder did try to clean up the mess. He fired male employees and tried to add more diversity around the building. This week, Snyder named his wife, Tanja, as the team’s CEO.

What the NFL did is not take the team away from Snyder. He wasn’t forced to sell, which is something the NFL has always been reluctant to do. The team will have to play $10 million. A lot of the money will be used to for character education.

Less than an hour after the Washington news was announced, the league cited three teams for violating safety issues in there OTA practices. San Francisco and Dallas were each fined $100,000 and Jacksonville was fined $200,000. Head coaches Kyle Shanahan and Mike McCarthy each received $50,000 fines while Urban Meyer was fined $100,000. There was no draft choice penalty.

With those announcements in the books, everyone looks to tomorrow and what happens with Rodgers. I’d say there is a 5 to 10 percent chance of him opting out. He loves playing football. He just doesn’t want to play for the Green Bay Packers. He’s already lost $593,000 for his workout bonus and fines for missing minicamp. Stay tuned for that one.
