Ex-Bronco Russell Wilson’s time as a starter has come to an end — again

Russell Wilson has not played his best football since he was traded to the Denver Broncos back in 2022. He was cut after just two years in Denver because the organization preferred to take a record-setting buyout instead of having him stay as the franchise’s quarterback, and even benched him for Jarrett Stidham in the final two games of the 2023 season — while somewhat in playoff contention — because Sean Payton was done with him.
Wilson then went to the Steelers in 2024 and played out the back end of the season after missing the first few weeks with an injury. The Steelers didn’t like him enough to keep him around as they lost the final five games of the season, and Wilson then found a new home in New York with the Giants.
After his first start with the G-Men — which went poorly — Giants head coach Brian Daboll was somewhat wishy-washy about keeping Wilson as the team’s starter. He dazzled in Week 2 with 450 yards and three touchdowns against the Cowboys, but threw a costly interception that was more of an arm punt in overtime, a play that arguably cost them the game. In Week 3 against Kansas City, he threw two more arm punts and threw the ball out of the back of the end zone three times in a goal-to-go situation near the end of the game while down two touchdowns.
That final throwaway ended up being the final straw for Daboll and the Giants brass as the fans booed and chanted, “We want Dart!”

It was announced on Tuesday that rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart would be the team’s starter going forward. Dart has been used in some running packages throughout the first three games of the season, but has not attempted a single pass. In the preseason, he completed 32 of his 47 passes for 372 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also ran the ball six times for 52 yards and a touchdown.
The vibes were high for New York in the preseason as they went 3-0 in the preseason, but were quickly dampened by a slumbering offense and Wilson’s antics en route to a 3-0 start. Is Dart the answer Giants fans are looking for?
For Broncos fans, it will be the second straight year in which Wilson comes to town after being cut, but won’t be on the field. When the Steelers came to town in Week 2 last year, Wilson was nursing an injury on the sideline, and this year, he will likely be on the bench as a backup unless something changes between now and Oct. 19. That game will be a 2:05 p.m. MDT kickoff from Empower Field at Mile High on CBS.
