Klatt: Latest College Football Playoff rankings the ‘laziest top 25’ he’s seen

The Colorado Buffaloes latest inch up the College Football Playoff rankings to No. 9 was something to be celebrated local sports fans and CU alumni alike, including former Buffs quarterback Joel Klatt.

But it was the methodology in which Colorado’s slight rise, and the entire poll was reached, that had Klatt up set while talking with 104.3 The fan’s “Schlereth and Evans” on Wednesday.

“Apparently, there was a lot of early flights, and they were all thinking about Thanksgiving, because that the laziest top 25 I’ve seen in my life,” Klatt said. “They essentially just moved everybody up one or two spots based on where people lost around them like the old AP poll used to do.”

In Week 12, CU moved up just that one spot, from No.10 to No. 9, after No. 5 Louisville tumbled six spots after a 36-10 loss to Houston.

All the teams in the top 10 teams moved up just that one spot, while the final four teams remained the same from last week.

Klatt also took exception to the criteria the committee uses to grade teams, whether it’s an “eye test” or what the Vegas odds might look like.

For example, undefeated Western Michigan sits at No. 21 in the CFP rankings (compared to No. 14 in the AP) likely due to committee members believing the Group of Five school couldn’t hang with heavier hitters in the top 10. And on the other hand, USC, which Klatt said would be favored over every except for maybe the top tier schools, sits at No. 12 because of it’s 8-3 record.

“So if you’re going to use the eye test, use it. And if you’re not, then don’t,” Klatt said. “… This committee just uses whatever logic they want to use to do whatever they want in the poll. And it drives me nuts.”
