Travis Hunter put together one of the most decorated individual seasons in the history of college football in 2024 for the Colorado Buffaloes as he led the team on both sides of the ball to a 9-4 record and an appearance in the Alamo Bowl. On Tuesday, he added yet another honor to his resume.
The Big 12 Conference announced that Hunter was the male recipient of the Bob Bowlsby Award, the “Conference’s highest individual honor.” The award “recognizes one male and one female student-athlete who exemplify excellence and leadership both on and off the field.”

Meghan Hunter, a medium-distance track runner for BYU, was the female nominee.
Hunter was named as the male nominee thanks to his remarkable skillset on the field along with his academic achievements and community outreach. In 2024, he became the second Heisman Trophy winner in the history of CU football, was the National Player of the Year by both the Associated Press and The Sporting News, a unanimous All-American, and the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. He won a laundry list of more awards: the Walter Camp Award, the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Fred Biletnikoff Award, the Lott Trophy and the Paul Hornung Award.
That was just last season.
The two-way phenom played 1,548 snaps in the 2024 season (including plays that were called back for penalties), 87% of the total offensive snaps and 83% of the total defensive snaps. He finished the year with 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 receiving touchdowns (most in CU history), plus another touchdown on the ground. On the defensive side of the ball, he wrapped up the year with 36 tackles, 25 solo and one for a loss, four interceptions for 65 return yards, 11 pass breakups and one forced fumble.
Don’t forget his fumble that completed Colorado’s one-of-a-kind comeback against Baylor in the pouring rain.

Hunter was also an Academic All-American in both of his years at CU, another reason why he was nominated for the Conference’s top individual award.
The league’s athletic directors are the people who voted on this honor, not the media. It is named after former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby.
Hunter had his jersey retired at the university as a result of his phenomenal efforts on the field in his two years at Boulder. Now, he is gearing up for his rookie season in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he is expected to contribute on both sides of the ball just like he did for Coach Prime and the Buffs.
