Salter, Buffs dazzle in 37-20 win over Wyoming

BOULDER, Colo. — How much of an impact does a 700 pound American Bison have on winning college football games?

Saturday night at Folsom Field showed that it has enough of an effect, as Kaidon Salter and the Colorado Buffaloes cruised to a 37-20 victory over the Wyoming Cowboys.  The Buffs were firing on all cylinders all night long and used a dominant second quarter to spring into the lead.

The defense got things started for Colorado, as they held the Cowboys to just 3.5 yards per play on their first two drives of the game. Eleven black helmets were swarming to the ball on every play as Robert Livingston’s unit injected even more life into the Folsom Field crowd.

Shortly after, Salter got the offense rolling as he engineered a 13-play, 85-yard touchdown drive that ended with a beautiful throw up the middle to Omarion Miller for the first score of the game. The Buffs got the run game established early, highlighted by some nice scampers from the veteran quarterback, which opened up more passing lanes down the field.

From that moment on, Salter was in complete control of the game. He was using his legs in a fashion that Buffs fans have been itching to see this season, he was accurate with his throws and he brought the physicality to the table when needed. In his third start for the black and gold, he finished with 304 yards and three touchdowns while completing 18 of his 28 pass attempts, and put the quarterback question that’s been plaguing this team to start the season to rest.

“Kaidon played his butt off .. he just made it happen,” Colorado head coach Deion Sanders said after the win. “The timing was impeccable.”

The big thing that played a key role in his success on Saturday was the play calling. There were less of the bubble screens that fans had gotten tired of through three games, more quarterback runs and more passes down the field. Salter found Sincere Brown for a 68-yard touchdown and Joseph Williams for a 47-yarder, as big plays were the name of the game that created separation for Colorado.

At one point, the scoreboard read 28-3, a mark that carries some significance in football, and Wyoming didn’t pack their bags early. A 41-yard strike up the left sideline from Kaden Anderson to Eric Richardson capped off a quick 75-yard scoring drive and gave some much-needed life to a Wyoming offense that had been dominated for an entire half outside of one big play. After a Buffs punt, Wyoming got a field goal on the next drive and cut the deficit to just two scores.

That’s when Micah Welch burst through the middle and sealed the game away for the Buffs — or so everyone thought. He was chased down by a Wyoming defender and had the ball stripped, which the Cowboys recovered at their own one yard line. That eventually proved to be detrimental and the ultimate difference in the game, in favor of the Buffs.

Three plays later with Wyoming still backed, Arden Walker came barreling into the backfield and swallowed Anderson for a safety to give Colorado 30 points on the night. Alejandro Mata had his field goal blocked on the ensuing drive and Wyoming followed it up with a quick touchdown, but were still down 10 points, 30-20, instead of just eight thanks to Walker’s safety.

Salter added an insurance touchdown with just under two minutes to go as the Red Sea parted in front of him en route to a 35-yard touchdown run. His 86 rushing yards led the Buffs in the contest. Omarion Miller was the leading receiver for Colorado with 88 yards and a touchdown, while Walker, Tawfiq Byard and Reggie Hughes each had six tackles to lead the defense.

Even though the scoreboard looked pretty for Colorado when it was all said and done, Coach Prime was not happy with how his team closed things out after taking a 25-point lead.

“I’m not happy with the finish. I’m happy with the results, but I’m not happy with the finish.”

While the Buffs had many things go their way in the win, they lost star left tackle Jordan Seaton and running backs DeKalon Tayler and Micah Welch to injuries. Coach Prime didn’t express too much concern about their statuses going forward.

“They should be cool.”
