The Colorado Buffaloes have been the talking point of the college football world since Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders arrived in Boulder after the 2022 season. Whether it’s for good reasons or bad, the Buffs have been in the spotlight as Prime has aimed to revive the program from the depths of college football.
From a 1-11 record to the season before he got here, to 4-8 in year one, to 9-4 in year two, Prime has done a solid job so far of re-igniting the winning culture that the program embodied in the 1990s. However, he has his biggest challenge ahead of him this year, as he has to find key players to fill the shoes of Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, who the program is enshrining as two of the greatest players in CU history before Saturday’s spring game.
Despite the challenge, Coach Prime isn’t worried about the next steps for Colorado football.
“I love where we are. We could always do better. I feel really good about the staff. I feel good about the support staff, where we are injury wise. I feel really good about Swasey. I feel really good about the program, the sky’s the limit,” Prime said at a press conference Thursday.
The Buffs lost two key players to the portal recently leading up to Saturday’s scrimmage in Taje McCoy and Adrian Wilson. McCoy was a force off the edge in 2024, while Wilson, a 4-star prospect in the 2025 class, is a promising wide receiver prospect. Losing key contributors to the portal is the new norm in college football, but Prime knows that he will be able to fill the holes left behind.
“We’ve got some tremendous guys identified that’s in the portal … We don’t jump the gun on that stuff because the last thing I want to hear is my name associated with tampering anything like they do our kids.”
Prime and the Buffs have a handful of talented prospects coming to snowy Boulder this weekend for the Black & Gold Spring Game, highlighted by 5-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo. During his time in Boulder, he’s always emphasized that he’s not hard to find, and this weekend’s recruiting lineup shows that nothing has changed.
Kickoff for the Spring Game is set for 2:30 p.m. from Boulder on Saturday as the Buffs kick off a new chapter of the Coach Prime era.
