Coach Prime says that Julian Lewis will play against Delaware

Julian Lewis, a four-star quarterback, was one of the biggest recruits of the Coach Prime era. The highly-touted signal caller was originally committed to USC before Prime and the Buffaloes flipped him to come to Boulder to succeed Shedeur Sanders as the next talented quarterback in Boulder.

Lewis, 17, reclassified to the 2025 recruiting class to make his way to the college football world a year early. After a shaky start to the season from veteran quarterback Kaidon Salter (which could be attributed to some below average play calling), some fans have already started to wonder if it’s time to see if the young buck is ready to step up to the plate and play.

Prime said that fans will get to see Lewis in action against Delaware.

“”He’s playing this week for sure. I know when we’re going to see him. You just don’t know when you’re going to see him,” Prime said.

Heading into last week’s game, Sanders said that the he would’ve liked for the freshman would get some action, but the game didn’t end up allowing that. This time around, the 57-year-old head coach has made up his mind. He didn’t say if Lewis was going to start, just that he was going to see some sort of action. No specification on how many plays or drives, and no specification on if he will start or not.

“Work with me. He’s playing. All right? He’s playing. You’ve got to understand, I love that kid, man, I really do. And I want him to be extremely successful. Sometimes you don’t want to rush things… You want to make sure the timing is right. I don’t think the time was appropriate last week. I really don’t at the way the game was flowing, the rhythm of the game, but this week, I made up my mind already before. Now, he’s going to play. I don’t give a darn about the flow of nothing, he’s playing,” Prime said.

Will this be the moment that Lewis is handed the keys to the offense? It very well could be, especially if Salter struggles to hit his targets like he did on Friday night. It seems like the vision is for Lewis to redshirt behind Salter this season, which means that he’s allowed to play in a maximum of four games before having to shut it down for the season. However, if he outperforms his senior counterpart on Saturday, that plan could very well be accelerated.

Colorado’s game against Delaware is scheduled to kick off from Folsom Field at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. For fans not making their way to Boulder to catch the game, they can watch on FOX.
