CU Buffs head coach Deion Sanders announces that he’s ‘cancer-free’

CU Buffs head coach Deion Sanders is sharing amazing news ahead of the 2026 college football season.

Coach Prime was on Good Morning America earlier this week and declared he’s “cancer-free.” This is obviously a fantastic development after Sanders revealed in July of 2025 that he had been fighting an aggressive bladder tumor.

Sanders had his bladder removed and said he was dealing with a catheter and moving around with bags of blood and urine.

It couldn’t have been a fun time for Coach Prime, fighting a tumor and lifestyle changes while leading the Buffs. But he seemed to be in good spirits on GMA on Tuesday.

“We fought the battle and we won the battle fighting cancer,” Deion Sanders said. “I’m cancer-free. I’m good. Great doctors in Colorado that have brought me through. God has brought me through. I’m thankful I’m healthy.”

First and foremost, it’s excellent to hear that Coach Prime feels like he can put this in the past. His health and well-being are obviously astronomically more important than results on the football field.

But coming off a disappointing 3-9 season in 2025, Sanders also sounds like he’s ready to turn the Buffs around as he enters his fourth year guiding the program.

“I’ve got my health back. I’ve got my swagger back. Last year at this time, I was fighting cancer, didn’t know which way it was going to go,” Deion Sanders said. “I’m fully back now. Last year at this time, it wasn’t a good look.”

It was clear that Sanders was battling health problems and not feeling right while coaching the team. Now that those are behind him it looks like he can put all his energy into trying to get Colorado back to winning.

The Buffs had a great 2024 season, going 9-4 and watching superstar Travis Hunter capture the Heisman Trophy. Both he and Shedeur Sanders departed for the NFL, also helping explain CU’s struggles last year.

“I’m ready to go coach my butt off this season,” Sanders added.

The fun for Deion Sanders and the Buffs begins on Thursday, Sept. 3 at Georgia Tech. And regardless of what happens in that game and beyond, Coach Prime has already won.
