For fans who don’t want to be sitting in bumper-to-bumper Boulder traffic until two in the morning, the game will be broadcast on ESPN.
This will be the sixth game in the Coach Prime era to kick off from Folsom in the late-night slot on ESPN. They played three such games in 2023 and two last season, and have posted a 2-3 record in such contests. The following week will be the seventh late game, as the Week 5 clash against the BYU Cougars was confirmed to be an ESPN late game long ago.
This will be the last game of non-conference play for Coach Prime and Colorado before diving into the grueling two-month stretch of Big 12 football for good. Realistically, the Cowboys are an opponent that Colorado should handle relatively easily, similar to Delaware, but anything is up for grabs as long as there is a question mark at the quarterback position for Colorado. Wyoming has taken care of business in its first two games against inferior opponents, but this week’s test against a ranked Utah team will better show where they sit on the college football totem pole.
For Buffs fans who have been watching every game the past few seasons, they know that nothing normal happens in these late-night games. Whether it has to do with Folsom Field or the change in routine for the players, it’s never just another game under the lights. 2023 featured the Colorado State 2OT thriller and the blown 29-0 lead against Stanford, while 2024 had the crazy Kansas State loss in which the Buffs seemingly filled an entire hospital with injured players and almost pulled off a miraculous comeback before the Wildcats stole it back.
Maybe it’s the Pac-12 after dark ghosts still haunting the college football world after conference realignment took away one of the most fun traditions in college football? Whatever it is, there’s some sense of magic at Folsom after 8 p.m., and Buffs fans will get to experience it in back-to-back weeks to end September.
