Buffs backup QB Dominiq Ponder dies in car crash

CU Buffs quarterback Dominiq Ponder died early Sunday morning in a single-car crash in Boulder County. The school’s athletic department announced Ponder’s passing later in the day Sunday.

Ponder was 23 years of age.

“Dominiq was one of my favorites because of his passion, his heart and his willingness to go beyond what was asked,” Buffs coach Deion Sanders said in as statement. “He will certainly be remembered, missed, and in our thoughts and prayers.”

Per multiple reports, the Colorado State Patrol believes that speed may have been a factor in the crash.

At approximately 3 a.m. Sunday morning, Ponder lost control of his Tesla while heading westbound on Baseline Road near Newland Court, by Baseline Reservoir. Per the CSP, the car crossed into the eastbound lane, collided with an electrical-line pole, rolled down an embankment and caught fire.

Ponder threw one pass for the Buffs last year, late in a 52-17 loss to the Arizona Wildcats. He also played briefly at FCS Bethune-Cookman University in 2023, going for 2-for-8 for 33 yards there before transferring to Georgia Tech and then eventually on to CU.
