Colorado State fires head coach Jay Norvell

Colorado State was embarrassed on Saturday, losing 31-19 in Fort Collins in front of the largest crowd in program history. For it, plus a poor start and a downward-pointing arrow in general, the Rams have fired head coach Jay Norvell.

The Rams went 18-26 over four years under Norvell, including a 2-5 record so far this fall.

Colorado State will pay a $1.5 million buyout for terminating Norvell; they would’ve owed him nothing but his base salary had they waited until Dec. 1.

The move is important for the Rams, who will move to the Pac-12 ahead of next fall. They’ll be looking for a refresh after just one bowl trip — last year — in the last eight years.

CSU has named Tyson Summers as interim head coach. Summers has been CSU’s defensive coordinator since January. He previously served as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2014 under then-Head Coach Mike Bobo. Summers came to Colorado State from Western Kentucky, where he was the Hilltoppers’ defensive coordinator for three seasons.

CSU says they will immediately begin a nationwide search for the next head football coach.
