One CFL team has eyes on Shedeur Sanders if NFL doesn’t work out

After a weekend where many teams across pro football said no to Shedeur Sanders, a team north of the border is interested in the quarterback from the Colorado Buffaloes. Sanders, who some at one point expected to be the first pick in the NFL Draft, fell all the way to the fifth round on Saturday. Ultimately, the Cleveland Browns with an already-full quarterback room, took a chance on Deion Sanders’ son with pick No. 144.

While some believe he can find a way to win that job among a group of veterans, projects and fellow rookies, the Toronto Argonauts are preparing in case Sanders hits the streets. The Canadian Football League team added Sanders to their negotiation list, per Dave Naylor of TSN. That gives the 19-time Grey Cup champions the first chance to sign Sanders should he want to play in Canada.

“CFL by-laws state that teams can claim exclusive rights for up to 45 players by placing them on their negotiation lists,” the league’s website says. “Players can be added, removed or traded from the lists at any time.”

It would be strange for Sanders to end up in Toronto after all the hype, but maybe not as wild as his slide over the weekend. Shedeur is looking to take his electric talent and famous name to the next level, with plenty of doubt about his skills, given the Draft Day tumble. Questions about Sanders have ranged from actual skill to concerns about his father’s management to the son’s “sandbagged” process.

When on the field in Boulder, Sanders showcased elite arm talent, pocket poise and football IQ. He boasts a cool demeanor under pressure, clutch performances and toughness. Sanders was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year following an awesome season where he ranked in the top 10 nationally in completion percentage (74%), passing yards (4,134) and touchdowns (37) while breaking Colorado school records for passing touchdowns, passing yards, consecutive games with a touchdown pass, quarterback rating and completion percentage.

Will Sanders play for the Browns? If it doesn’t work out, will he go try to prove himself in Toronto? His dad will be sticking in Boulder, Coach Prime just signed a giant contract extension to keep running the Buffs while his sons now hit the pros.
