Buffaloes QB Sefo Liufau: ‘We play for each other’

Just more than a year after Sefo Liufau fractured his left foot, leaving him sidelined for the remainder of his junior year, the Colorado Buffaloes quarterback said he only had one goal in mind: to return to play with his group of Buffs.

At the time, Liufau had played nearly three full seasons in which CU won only 10 games, total, and just two Pac-12 conference matchups.

Yet, Liufau told 104.3 The Fan’s “Schlereth and Evans” this week that he just “wanted to be a part of it because of how close we are as a senior class.”

Now, on the verge of its 10th win of the 2016 alone, Liufau’s Buffs are riding a wave of momentum that could take them not only to the Pac-12 championship but also, perhaps, a crack at a national title.

“I think the biggest thing is that the hard work’s finally paying off. I think that we’ve been putting in so much, and it hasn’t been going our way in the past couple of years. For it to finally all come together and for us to finally start winning some games, that’s probably the best part,” Liufau said.

“And probably out of that too is the group that I’m doing it with. None of us really quit. None of us transferred. To do it with this group is really special to me.”

And it’s that team-first mentality, Liufau said, that’s carried on through the season for the Buffaloes.

“The biggest thing is that we play for each other. We don’t play for anyone the outside, we just play for the man to our left and our right and just try to go out there and get the win every week,” Liufau said.

As for expectations about this season, there weren’t any. Liufau said he didn’t know how special 2016 could be, and that he and his teammates still keep focusing on just one week at a time.

“In my mind, each week is a championship game. Any given week anyone can beat anyone, so it’s important to fully prepare each and every week,” Liufau said.

And in No. 9 CU’s sights this week, a No. 22 Utah Utes team that could play spoiler. Should the Buffs lose Saturday, No. 12 USC would take the Pac-12 South and face the winner of No. 5 Washington and No. 23 Washington State on Friday.
