Nikola Jokic doesn’t believe this current Nuggets team can win another title

Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic was in an honest mood after his team got blown out in Game 7 on Sunday.

And what he said might be hard for Nuggets fans to hear.

When asked if this current Nuggets core can win another championship, Jokic didn’t hold much back.

“I mean, we didn’t. So obviously we can’t. If we could we would win it, so I don’t believe in those ‘ifs.’ We had opportunity (and) we didn’t win, so I think we can’t,” Nikola Jokic said.

The Nuggets lost 125-93 to the Oklahoma City Thunder, and there will be no second title in the last three years. Jokic finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, but got very little help from the rest of the team.

Jamal Murray had only 13 points. Michael Porter Jr. added only six. Christian Braun was Denver’s second best player with 19. Aaron Gordon had no business playing with a tough hamstring injury and contributed eight points and 11 rebounds.

The Nuggets bench was terrible, getting six points from Russell Westbrook and four from Peyton Watson before interim head coach David Adelman emptied it in garbage time.

Nikola Jokic hit on Denver’s lack of depth as well.

“It seems like the teams that have longer rotations, longer bench is the ones who are winning,” Jokic said.

He went on to mention Indiana, OKC and Minnesota, three of the four teams still alive for the NBA title this season.

Whoever the Nuggets hire as their next GM will have a lot of work to do to make this roster better, particularly when it comes to depth. Adelman really only had seven or maybe eight guys he could trust in this series — and it burned Denver.

Nothing Nikola Jokic is saying is wrong, but it better be heard by ownership when it comes to their decisions this offseason.

You only get so many windows with the best player in the world, and the Nuggets need to make sure Jokic’s career ends with more than one championship.
