Colorado prep standout, four-time All-Star Micheal Ray Richardson dies

The leader of the 1972 Manual High School basketball state championship team and four-time NBA All-Star Micheal Ray Richardson died Monday at the age of 70.

The two-time All Defensive Team player led the NBA in steals three times. Richardson was the 1985 Comeback Player of the Year, played professionally until age 46 and ranks in the top 10 of New York Knicks history in assists, steals and triple doubles.

“We are saddened to hear about the passing of former Knick Micheal Ray Richardson. One of the fiercest defensive players of his era, the four-time NBA All-Star made an incredible impact on the Knicks during his four seasons with the franchise. Our deepest condolences go to his family, friends and teammates,” the Knicks said in a statement.

Richardson’s NBA career came to a halt earlier than expected when he was suspended for life by David Stern for a third positive cocaine test. He was later reinstated but kept playing overseas. He won many championships across the world from Europe to Canada and beyond.

Larry Bird once called him the best basketball player on the planet.

Richardson died after a battle with prostate cancer.
